World Youth Day – Live from Ghent

One of the chants echoing throughout these days is “God is good- all the time”. And his providence was in such evidence today! Our day started off with al-fresco breakfast in the glorious sunshine before heading off to St Bavo’s Cathedral, joining the local parishioners for Mass. Wonderfully surprising, apart from the warm welcome we received, was the knowledge that we were celebrating Mass in the same crypt chapel that St Oliver Plunkett was consecrated Archbishop of Armagh on his return journey to Ireland from Rome.
After Mass and the tour of the famous and magnificent VanEyck Ghent altarpiece, the pilgrims went in search of their Instagram challenge of a picture with a Ghent Nose.  Followed by a tour of Ghent Castle with Alex, our Ratoath pilgrim providing some convincing tour guide information in different languages. Jane, one for the committee members, cooked up a feast for an army on the BBQ while ultimate frisbee was won by Conor’s team.
Barry led us in night prayer with special thanksgiving for the highlights of today and prayers for so many people and intentions being carried by the group.
Tomorrow we travel through Germany to arrive in the city of Płock for the “Days in the Diocese”.
