We are being encouraged to walk to Mass on Sunday 21 September (UN Day of Peace) as a gesture of solidarity with Christians and all who are suffering persecution in the Middle East.

Posters (colour and greyscale) have been prepared by Aid to the Church in Need for parish notice-boards (http://acnireland.org/index.php/home/the-crisis/walk-to-church-poster).

Fr Robert McCabe describes the Walk to Church project as a means of enabling Irish families and communities to express prayerful solidarity with families of Iraq and Syria who have been targeted, terrorised and banished from their homes because of their Christian identity.

Interview from Vatican Radio describing the Walk to Church initiative:

Fr Robert is inviting parishes to consider and to advertise the initiative on Sunday 14 September (the Feast of the Holy Cross) and to encourage their congregations to walk all or part of the journey to Church on the following Sunday 21 September.

Suggested prayers of Intercession:

14 September

• Let us pray for all Christians who suffer persecution and exile for their faith. May our prayers and charitable generosity help them to carry their crosses with dignity, courage and hope.
Lord, hear us.

• Let us pray God’s blessing on the work and safety of Irish peacekeepers and their UN colleagues on the Golan Heights.
Lord, hear us.

21 September

• We pray for all displaced peoples, especially the elderly and families with young children. May we never take the comfort of our homes for granted.
Lord, hear us.

• On this United Nations Day of Peace, we pray for members of An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces and especially for Irish peacekeepers and their UN colleagues on the Golan Heights and Lebanon.
Lord, hear us.
