The Trocaire appeal in the parishes of the Diocese of Meath during Lent 2014 raised a total of € 346,423.00.
Hannah Evans from Clonard explains that Trocaire is supporting those affected by the Ebola crisis in West Africa. “Many people are prevented from working on farms or in large groups so to avoid the spread of the virus” Hannah Evans said. “Trocaire is distributing food to a large number of families who have no other means of providing for their children. The region is likely to experience more food shortages over the coming months as a result of the disruption to the planting and harvesting seasons.”
The following are some excerpts from the letter of Eamonn Meehan, Director of Trocaire, to Bishop Michael Smith, acknowledging receipt of the proceeds of the Lenten appeal in the Diocese of Meath:
“At the very heart of Trocaire’s work is a belief in helping people to help themselves, so that they can overcome poverty and determine a better future of themselves. We are deeply grateful for the continued support and commitment we receive from the clergy and the people of the Diocese of Meath to help families and communities transform their lives.”
While the contribution in some parishes was the same or lower in a number of parishes, compared with figures for 2013, it is positive to note that there was an increase in the donations from 24 out of the 69 parishes.
