Students from Mercy Secondary School, Kilbeggan came to the Cathedral in Mullingar for a day of prayer and reflection on Wednesday 5 October 2016.
The retreat was organised by Fr Brendan Corrigan as part of the Jubilee of Mercy.
During the day, Fr Corrigan told the students that “God has a calling for each person because he loves us”. He then introduced a number of people who spoke about their calling in priesthood and religious life.
Two Missionaries of Charity, the congregation founded by Saint Teresa of Calcutta, joined the retreat. Sr Edward described the work of the recently canonised saint while she was in India and explained how the sisters in Dublin try to carry on her mission and follow her example.
The students welcomed two Dominicans, Fr Luke and Bro. Philip. Fr Luke is originally from The Netherlands but has lived in Ireland for 14 years and now teaches at Newbridge College. Bro Philip had joined Manchester United under Alex Ferguson and was part of the famed class of ‘92 featuring the likes of Beckham, Scholes, Giggs and the Neville brothers. The former Manchester United footballer, who won 27 caps for Northern Ireland, swapped his football jersey for a Dominican habit in 2009.
Fr Shane Crombie, a past pupil of Mercy Secondary School, Kilbeggan gave the final testimony after which the students were led in prayer and then had an opportunity for confessions in the Cathedral.
