Ceremonies took place in every church in the Diocese of Meath on Good Friday, commemorating the passion and death of Christ.
Bishop Michael Smith presided at the Passion of the Lord in St Mary’s Parish, Navan at 3:00pm, which included the reading from St John’s Gospel and the Veneration of the Cross. The Bishop led the Stations of the Cross in St Oliver’s Church, Navan and took part in the ecumenical Way of the Cross through the streets of the town, assisted by Fr Declan Hurley and Canon John Clarke.
At the Cathedral of Christ the King, Mullingar the Passion of the Lord was celebrated at 3:00pm. Earlier, an outdoor Way of the Cross which began at St Paul’s Church and concluded at the steps of the Cathedral.
Among the various ceremonies in Tullamore, the members of the Junior Pastoral Council reenacted the Stations of the Cross in the Church of the Assumption. An ecumenical walk of witness by candlelight began at 9:00pm at St Catherine’s Church, Hophill and made its way through the streets of the town with a pause for prayer in each church, concluding in the Church of the Assumption.
Elsewhere Good Friday was marked by numerous opportunities for Confessions, as well as Prayer around the Cross with Taize chants, bringing the day to a close.
