Bishop Smith has extended his sympathies to the family and friends of Fr Joseph Garvey PE, who died on Friday 2 October 2015.
Fr Garvey was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Meath in 1961. His first ministry brought him to Lima (Peru) for three years, after which he served in Northhampton (UK) from 1964 until 1969. He was appointed Curate in Longwood on 23 August 1969 and Curate in Eglish on 26 August 1971. Having spent 18 months ministering in Phoenix (USA) he returned to Ireland as Curate in Dunsany on 11 September 1975, where he remained until his appointment as Parish Priest of Curraha on 3 December 1989. Fr Garvey served as Parish Priest of Curraha for almost 17 years and he retired in September 2006.
The funeral arrangements are as follows:
Arriving at St Andrew’s Church, Curraha on Sunday 4 October at 6pm and reposing until 8pm.
Reposing at St Andrew’s Church on Monday 5 October from 7pm, concluding with Night Prayer at 9pm.
Requiem Mass on Tuesday 6 October at 12 noon with burial in the Church grounds.
In his homily at the Requiem Mass, Fr Phil Gaffney referred to the parish Jubilee book, published in 2000. The introduction, written by Fr Garvey, included the following quotation –
“Our own lovely little church in Curraha, built at the turn of the century, in difficult economic circumstances, symbolises so well the enduring faith and hope of a great people. The church directs our thoughts to heavenly things and speaks eloquently of the faith of our people a hundred years ago. We are the beneficiaries of a great legacy, given to us in trust for future generations, a legacy of faith uniquely honed and tested”.
