Rev Robert McGivney (28) will be ordained to the priesthood on Sunday, 28th June 2015 in St Mary’s Church, Navan by Most Reverend Michael Smith, Bishop of Meath. Robert is a native of Navan, Co. Meath, the son of Mr Gerry McGivney, a retired teacher and well-known local GAA Referee, and the late Mrs June McGivney. Mrs June McGivney passed away in October 2014. He is the middle of two brothers, Joseph (29) and Shane (24).
After finishing his secondary education in St. Patrick’s Classical School, Navan, Robert completed a 4 year degree in Mathematics in Trinity College, Dublin. He began his seminary studies and formal discernment process in 2009 and has just qualified in his studies of Theology from St Patrick’s College, Maynooth.
During his studies, Robert took the opportunity to work with the Daughters of Charity in Calcutta in the summer 2012 which he described as a “life changing experience”. Along with that he has worked in parishes in the United States and undertook an intensive chaplaincy ministry course in Wisconsin in 2013. He was ordained a deacon last year in Maynooth College, and has assisted in many parishes of the diocese, particularly in Navan and Dunboyne.
Speaking on behalf of the Parish pastoral Council, Mr Phil Cuffe said “It is a great testimony to our vibrant parish community in the way the parish of Navan has rallied around Robert in the preparations for the ordination”. A large parish celebration of music, food and dance will take place to mark Robert celebrating his First Mass of Thanksgiving on Monday 29th June at 7pm in St. Mary’s Church. A number of parishioners are involved in promoting awareness of this important moment in the life of the parish and to extend an open invitation to parishioners.
