During the course of her one day visit to Ireland last month, Burma’s opposition leader was briefed by Ms Brigid Weir on efforts by the Diocese of Meath to care for children in her native land. Ms Aung San Suu Kyi expressed her thanks to Ms Weir, who coordinates a project involving sixth class pupils in 10 primary schools which are twinned with their migrant schools for Burmese children.
The Burmese opposition leader travelled to Norway to collect the Nobel Peace Prize before coming to Ireland on 19 June. She was educated in Catholic schools and appreciates the role of the Church in education.
Among those in attendance at the reception to welcome Ms Suu Kyi was Mgr Paul Grawng, Archbishop of Mandalay who was in Ireland for the International Eucharistic Congress. Also present were three Columban Sisters who have been working with Archbishop Grawng in Burma, two of whom hope to return to the country shortly. Columban Fathers from Dalgan Park were also present, remembering the priests who served for decades in Burma before being expelled by the military junta.
