Bishop Michael Smith visited the newly renovated Cathedral in Longford on Saturday 20 December 2014, bringing congratulations from Mullingar Cathedral and the Diocese of Meath.
St Mel’s Cathedral was devastated five years ago when fire destroyed the interior of the building, most of its furnishings and fittings, and the roof on Christmas Eve/Christmas morning in 2009.
Bishop Smith described the renovations as a beautiful work which speaks eloquently of the local community’s pride in their Cathedral and all it represents.
The Bishop was one of a large number of people from Longford and elsewhere who came to visit the Cathedral on its first day of reopening. He was welcomed by Bishop Francis Duffy of Ardagh and Clonmacnois.
