The annual pilgrimage walk from the Hill of Tara to the Hill of Slane took place on Saturday, 30th August. Just over one hundred pilgrims made the 15 mile (24km) walk which was led by Fr. Declan Hurley Adm., Navan. Also taking part in the pilgrimage this year were over twenty members of the Deaf community with their chaplain Fr. Gerard Tyrrell.
The walk, also known as “Bealach an tSolais”, is rich in symbolism. Tara, the seat of the High Kings of Ireland, is a symbol of Ireland’s pre-Christian history. Slane, according to tradition, is where St. Patrick first lit the Paschal Fire in Ireland. The pilgrimage is therefore a walk towards the Light of Christ and symbolises the path of Christian faith. The route winds its way through the parishes of Skryne, Walterstown and Beauparc, stopping at ancient and modern Christian sites for moments of prayer and reflection, before crossing the River Boyne at Slane and concluding on the Hill of Slane
